History

IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar was established in 1999 with a view to provide higher education to the masses of Kashmir Division including Leh and Kargil. Regional Centre started its functioning from the campus of University of Kashmir with jurisdiction over the valley of Kashmir and the districts of Kargil, Leh and Ladakh with just four Study Centres, 14 programmes and around a thousand learners. Within the span of 19 years of its existence, Regional Centre Srinagar has enrolled over 3 lakh learners and emerged as one of the largest Regional Centres across the country.

 

At present IGNOU RC Srinagar is operating practically in every nook and corner of Kashmir through a network of 46 Learner Support Centres, comprising 29 Regular Study Centres (RSCs), 13 Programme Study Centres (PSCs) and 4 Special Study Centres (SSCs). The Regional Centre has established Learner Support Centres (LSCs) in all the districts of its jurisdiction and it is trying to reach the unreached by way of establishing LSCs at sub division and blocks levels.

 

RC Srinagar is offering more than 150 academic programmes of IGNOU starting from Certificates, Diplomas, Advance Diplomas, PG Diplomas, Bachelors and Masters in various disciplines. The professional Programmes being offered include MBA, MBA Banking and Finance, MCA, BCA, MLIS, BLIS, MTTM (Masters in Tourism and Travel Management), Masters Degree in Dietetics and Food Service Management, Counselling and Family Therapy, Diploma in Hospital Health Management, Maternal and Child Health, Geriatric Medicine, Information Security, B. Ed., Bachelor and Diploma programmes in Nursing, Psychology, Anthropology, Phylosophy etc. Many students of Jammu and Kashmir are also pursuing IGNOU’s M. Phil/PhD, which are being offered from IGNOU Hq based on the UGC regulations.

 

The Regional Centre has witnessed the highest enrolments over the recent past particularly in the programmes like Masters in Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, Psychology, Management, English, Rural Development, History and Education.

 

To improve and maintain the quality of education in ODL system we regularly organize orientation programmes and meeting with our coordinators and counselors and other related personalities in the field of education. We also seek feedback from our learners and its various stake holders. Regional Centre has held a conference to disseminate the information regarding the various programmes offered by IGNOU. The officials also went to the remote areas of Kashmir that includes Karnah, Kangan in Ganderbal district etc. Orientation programme was organized at SC-1211 (Govt. Degree College, Boys, Anantnag) where students from the district Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Tral were invited to participate. Similarly one more orientation programme was organized at SC-1210 (Govt. Degree College, Sopore) where the students from the areas like Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora etc participated and shown very much interest in joining the IGNOU. Free leaflets were distributed among the participants. New programmes launched by IGNOU were introduced which includes Masters in Gender Development, Gandhi and Peace Studies, Anthropology, Panchayati Raj, Environmental Science and Information security. Conference was organized at CRPF premises in Bandipora by the Regional Centre where above 300 participants were present which includes CRPF Jawans, their families, Higher official and the local residents. In case of enrollment 61.1% are already employed, 46.02% are female and 55.65% are in the age group of 26 to 30 years. 31.8% of the Students are from far flung and remote areas.
